A year ago, Dirk Raulf invited me to hold a solo exhibition at the historic synagogue in Lippstadt, Germany. During my first visit, Dirk showed me the garden house door covered in scratches and graffiti from the 1930s. One particular scratch caught my attention: “Grünebergs sind verrückt,” meaning “The Grünbergs are crazy.”

Inspired by this, I decided to create a neon light installation to hang on the east wall of the synagogue, facing Jerusalem, where the Torah scroll used to be. I also planned to remove the plaster wall and use the old stone as the backdrop for the artwork.

As we started the process, we were surprised to uncover the Niche behind the plaster wall—a sacred space where the holy closet once stood. The unexpected discovery added even more significance to the installation.
